DATE: 15 SEPTEMBER 2025
EVENT: Seminar on Suicide Prevention
THEME: Suicide Prevention
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
* Identify suicide risk factors and warning signs.
* Communicate gently and listen without judgement.
* Take safety measures and seek timely help.
The Suicide Prevention Seminar was conducted on the occasion of Suicide Prevention Day
(observed on 10th September) for teachers presented by Ms. Manisha to raise awareness of this critical
mental health issue. She shared that worldwide one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds. Major risk
factors include depression, family history, early parental loss, broken homes, addiction disorders,
isolation, unemployment and acute life problems.
Teachers were guided to watch for warning signs in children such as talking or writing about
suicide, misuse of medicines or drugs, self-destructive acts, giving away possessions, mood swings, social
withdrawal, hopelessness and unusual teenage behaviour.
Caretakers and teachers should keep medicines, sharp objects and other self-harm tools out
of reach of the children, seek prompt help in cases of substance abuse , begin gentle conversations and
listen without judgement. Reassure students that asking for help is not a weakness, and ask which social
Media platforms or activities the student enjoys or dislikes to support at-risk students effectively. Using
calm, supportive words to encourage openness and trust.
The seminar effectively highlighted the importance of early detection, compassionate
communication, and timely intervention. Teachers were sensitized to recognize warning signs and provide
a safe space for students to express their feelings.
